How a Vietnam eSIM compares

Carrier roaming

~€11/day

≈ €154 for 2 weeks

Typical international roaming charge from major EU/UK/US carriers in Vietnam. Caps often activate after €60/month and throttle to dial-up speeds.

Local SIM at airport

€15 to €40

one-time plus setup hassle

Viettel and Vinaphone tourist SIMs cost €15 to €25 at airport kiosks in Hanoi (HAN), HCMC (SGN), or Da Nang (DAD). Activation requires passport registration. Most kiosks are open 24 hours, which is more than you can say in many countries.

RoamingFlex eSIM

€8.79

3GB / 15 days

Same plan covers 2 weeks of travel in Vietnam. QR code in under 90 seconds. No app, no airport queue, no passport scan.

How much data you actually need in Vietnam

Tourists in Vietnam average 400MB/day. Vietnam tourist data averages 370 to 440 MB per day. Grab dominates ride-hailing and food (Be is the growing local alternative), Google Maps for navigation, and Google Translate for menus. Vietnamese street-food culture leans heavily on translation apps if you don't speak the language. Source: RoamingFlex 22-destination data usage dataset (CC BY 4.0).

Insider tip

Use Grab's motorbike option (GrabBike) for short city distances in Hanoi or HCMC. It costs about a third of GrabCar and avoids the traffic in ways cars cannot. The driver provides a helmet. The map shows the exact route and fare upfront, so there's no negotiation.

Vietnam eSIM frequently asked questions

Will the eSIM work on Ha Long Bay cruises?

Mostly yes. Viettel has the strongest coverage in the Ha Long Bay area. Most of the popular cruise routes stay within signal range. Deeper into Lan Ha Bay you'll see weaker signal or short dropouts.

Does it cover Sapa and the mountain trekking routes?

Sapa town itself has solid 4G. The trekking routes drop into intermittent signal once you're a few kilometres out, but most homestays in the surrounding villages have working signal because Viettel has prioritised the area for tourism.

How much data do I need for a 14-day Vietnam trip?

5GB to 10GB. Vietnamese tourists move around a lot (Hanoi to Ha Long to Hoi An to HCMC is a common 2-week loop), and each transit segment burns Maps data. If you're uploading travel content daily, go 10GB or higher.

Will it work in the Mekong Delta?

Yes. Coverage in Can Tho and the bigger Mekong towns is reliable on 4G. The smaller river villages and the floating markets have weaker signal but it stays usable.

Can I use it on the Reunification Express train?

Yes for most of the route. The Hanoi to HCMC train spends 30+ hours covering the country and signal is continuous in the populated coastal stretch. Some inland mountain sections drop signal briefly.

Does the plan include voice calls?

No, data only. Zalo is the dominant local messaging app in Vietnam, more popular than WhatsApp for local business. Tour operators and homestays often communicate via Zalo.
