How a Greece eSIM compares

Carrier roaming

~€10/day

≈ €140 for 2 weeks

Typical international roaming charge from major EU/UK/US carriers in Greece. Caps often activate after €60/month and throttle to dial-up speeds.

Local SIM at airport

€15 to €40

one-time plus setup hassle

Cosmote and Vodafone tourist SIMs cost €15 to €25 a week at any kiosk. Activation needs a passport and takes about 20 minutes. Most ferry-island kiosks don't stock them, so you'd need to buy in Athens first.

RoamingFlex eSIM

€8.15

3GB / 15 days

Same plan covers 2 weeks of travel in Greece. QR code in under 90 seconds. No app, no airport queue, no passport scan.

How much data you actually need in Greece

Tourists in Greece average 350MB/day. Greek tourist data averages 320 to 400 MB per day. The Beat app for taxis in Athens, the Ferryhopper app for island-hopping logistics, and Google Maps for the surprisingly steep walks in Santorini. Hotel WiFi is generally fine; taverna WiFi varies wildly. Source: RoamingFlex 22-destination data usage dataset (CC BY 4.0).

Insider tip

Download Ferryhopper before you fly. It aggregates every Greek ferry route across all the operators (Blue Star, SeaJets, Hellenic Seaways), shows real-time cancellations from weather, and is much more reliable than booking directly through individual operators' English-language sites.

Greece eSIM frequently asked questions

Will the eSIM work on the Greek islands?

Yes. Cosmote and Vodafone cover every populated Greek island including the Cyclades (Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos), Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, and the Sporades. 5G is in the bigger resort towns.

Does it work on inter-island ferries?

Mostly yes, with breaks. Ferries between close islands (Santorini to Ios, Mykonos to Naxos) keep signal nearly continuously. Longer Athens-to-island crossings have stretches of weak or no signal in the middle.

How much data do I need for a 10-day Greek island hop?

5GB covers a typical 10-day island hop with normal photo uploads and ferry app use. 3GB is enough if you mostly use WiFi at the hotels.

Will it cover the Athens Metro?

Coverage in Athens Metro stations is reliable. Tunnel sections drop briefly. The Athens tram and bus network have full signal.

Does it work for hikes like the Samaria Gorge in Crete?

Coverage is reliable at the trailhead and on the upper sections. The deeper sections of the gorge (between the rock walls) drop to no signal. Same for the Vikos Gorge in Epirus. Pack offline maps for any serious hike.

Can I use the Greek eSIM in Cyprus?

No, Cyprus has separate carriers. RoamingFlex sells a Cyprus plan if you're visiting both.
