How a Portugal eSIM compares

Carrier roaming

~€9/day

≈ €126 for 2 weeks

Typical international roaming charge from major EU/UK/US carriers in Portugal. Caps often activate after €60/month and throttle to dial-up speeds.

Local SIM at airport

€15 to €40

one-time plus setup hassle

Portuguese prepaid SIMs cost €15 to €25 a week from MEO, NOS, or Vodafone shops in Lisbon or Porto. Activation needs a passport and Portuguese tax-ID-equivalent, which slows things down.

RoamingFlex eSIM

€7.99

3GB / 15 days

Same plan covers 2 weeks of travel in Portugal. QR code in under 90 seconds. No app, no airport queue, no passport scan.

How much data you actually need in Portugal

Tourists in Portugal average 340MB/day. Portugal tourist data averages 310 to 380 MB per day. Bolt and Uber both work well in Lisbon and Porto, Google Maps handles the rest, and CP's app covers the regional rail. Portuguese WiFi in cafes and hotels is reliable and usually fast. Insider tip

Buy a Lisboa Card or Porto Card for transit plus museum entry. They're cheaper than paying per-attraction and they let you skip the ticket queue at Belém and the Sé. For longer trips, Comboios de Portugal's regional trains are slower but much cheaper than the Alfa Pendular tilting express.

Portugal eSIM frequently asked questions

Does the eSIM work in Madeira and the Azores?

Yes. Both are autonomous regions of Portugal and the eSIM covers them on the same plan. Madeira and São Miguel have full 4G LTE; some of the smaller Azorean islands have weaker coverage in remote areas.

Will it cover the Algarve resort coast?

Yes. The entire Algarve from Vila Real de Santo António to Sagres has reliable 4G LTE. 5G is in Faro, Albufeira, and Lagos. Beach areas have signal but it can dip slightly behind cliffs.

How much data do I need for a week in Portugal?

3GB is comfortable for Lisbon plus Porto. 5GB if you're adding the Algarve or Douro Valley with photo-heavy days.

Does it work on the Alfa Pendular trains?

Yes. Coverage on the Lisbon-Porto and Porto-Faro routes is reliable. Some hilly sections in the centre of the country have brief signal drops.

Will the eSIM work in Sintra (the palace area)?

Yes. The town of Sintra has solid 4G LTE. The palaces themselves (Pena, Quinta da Regaleira) have signal in the grounds, with weaker pockets in the densest forest areas.

Can I use it in Spain on a quick border trip?

No. Portugal plans are Portugal only. For Iberian cross-border trips, use a regional Europe plan covering both.
